Obituary for Thomas Hickey

Thomas Hickey
Hickey, Thomas – BA, BEd, MEd, MAT

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the sudden passing of Tom “Tommy” Hickey on April 16, 2018 in his 73rd year in Honolulu Hawaii while on vacation. Loving husband of Violette Hickey (nee Rudzianskas) for 42 wonderful years. He is predeceased by his parents William and Mary Bride, his brother Liam and his sister Ann. Dear brother of Andrew (Janet). Uncle of many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in England. Tom emigrated from England in 1969 and was always proud of his Irish/English roots. He was a member of the Hamilton Hornets Rugby Club and loved the Everton soccer team back home. Tom retired from the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board after many years of teaching in both the elementary and secondary panels. He also coached many sports teams in track and field, rugby, and especially girls soccer at St. Mary’s High School taking the team to OFSAA Championships multiple times with his friend and co-coach, Sean Kiely. He was highly respected and loved by his students and fellow staff. Tom had a great sense of humour and a very outgoing nature. He loved to travel and always enjoyed new experiences. He also enjoyed all types of games, notably cribbage and trivia, and he was exceptional at playing them. He was a kind and generous man who will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME (1919 King St. E. between Rosedale and Cochrane) on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. with prayers being offered at 8:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 9 a.m. at Incarnation of Our Blessed Lord Parish (corner of Barton and Nash Rd. Hamilton). Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Good Shepherd would be greatly appreciated.
