SISTER CAROLINE STRAUS (BARBARA)

The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada (Hamilton) are saddened to announce the death of Sister Caroline Straus, following a brief illness at St. Joseph’s Convent, Hamilton, Ontario on Friday, September 28 th in her 92nd year of life and her 76th year as a Sister of St. Joseph. Sister Caroline was the daughter of the late Mary Barbara Ditner and Michael Straus. She was predeceased by her brothers Wilfred, Gerard, Ralph, Eugene and Jacob, and her sisters Reta and Adeline. She is survived by her sisters Sister Christina and Sister Lucy, Sisters of St. Joseph in Hamilton; Sister Michaeline and Sister Mildred, School Sisters of Notre Dame in Waterdown; Lucille (Delisle) of Chilliwack, British Columbia; many nieces
and nephews, and the members of her religious community. Sister’s ministries were quite varied and marked with dedication, caring and self-giving. Early in her religious life she served as a housekeeper and cook in Brantford, then for several years as head of dietary at both the Motherhouse and the House of Providence in Dundas. After a brief period teaching at St. Ann’s School in Hamilton, her life’s dream of becoming a Registered Nurse became a reality. With a speciality in Obstetrics she spent many years as supervisor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brantford and St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener. After her retirement, Sister Caroline directed her energies and multiple talents toward volunteering at Life Line and Birth Right. She also very lovingly cared for her mother during her final years. Sister Caroline was a joy filled woman who lived life with enthusiasm and a delightful sense of humour. She expressed her creativity through artwork, sewing and quilting. In her latter years she lived at St. Joseph’s Convent and was engaged in prayer ministry. The Sisters of St. Joseph will welcome family and friends at St. Joseph’s Convent, Hamilton on Friday, October 5 th from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 6 th at 10:30 at St. Joseph’s Convent, Hamilton. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Burlington.
As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada for the works of the Congregation.
