Obituary for Florence Mary Quigley

Died Peacefully on Friday, August 11, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, in Hamilton, Ontario, embraced in the companionship, support and love of her family. Florence was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Gerard John Quigley of Hamilton, devoted and caring mother of Maureen (Patrick Reid), Michael (Dale Philp), and Mark, and much loved Grandma of Aislinn and Kyla Reid; Sarah, Matthew, and Lisa Quigley; and of young Fergus, her furry, four-footed grandson, all of Toronto.

Florence was born on November 24, 1919 in Boston Massachusetts, the only daughter of the late John James Murphy and Florence Mary Goldsmith of West Rutland, Vermont and Boston Massachusetts, She was predeceased by her brothers John Murphy of Syracuse, New York, Robert Murphy of West Rutland, Vermont, and Richard Murphy of West Acton, Massachusetts, and her sister and brother-in-law, Anne Marie Quigley and Thomas Quigley of Toronto, Ontario.

After a career in nursing in Burlington, Vermont, and Baltimore, Maryland, Florence came to Canada with Gerard in 1949. They moved to Hamilton soon after, where they built a life together in the Hamilton medical community and raised their children. While Gerard did his part as an Obstetrician to assist in Hamilton’s population expansion in those days, Florence maintained a tireless dedication to volunteer work in the Hamilton area, for the Catholic Women’s League, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Royal Botanical Gardens, and Art Gallery of Hamilton. She will be fondly remembered as a long time member of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

As one of her 25th anniversary gifts to her beloved Gerard, Florence was very proud in 1974 to become a citizen of Canada, her adopted land. Since his death twenty years ago, she has traveled, enjoyed the company of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren, and been a great friend of so many long-time and newer companions.

She was a sprite of determined and fierce independence, who insisted on taking the bus to Toronto for regular Sunday dinners with her children and their families until only weeks ago. She was a woman of extraordinary deep religious faith and a parishioner over the years of Canadian Martyrs, Christ the King, and St. Charles Garnier churches. She strongly supported charities focused on helping the needy, young and old, both in her Hamilton backyard and in the third world. Her children, her grandchildren and her many friends will miss her charm, humour, and fearless willingness to speak her mind freely, her incurable love of sweets, especially chocolate, and above all, her very firm handshake, her wonderful smile and laugh, and her excellent company.

Our family wishes to give thanks to the wonderful and caring medical and nursing staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital for the care they provided to Florence in recent months, and particularly for ensuring her comfort in her last days and hours.

Friends are asked to join her family for visitation, to reminisce and to laugh together at the P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., Hamilton, Ontario on Monday August 14 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Charles Garnier Catholic Church, 129 Hughson Street South, Hamilton, on Tuesday, August 15 at 11:00 am. Interment St. Augustine’s Cemetery, Dundas, Ontario, where Gerard waits for her.

In lieu of flowers, Florence would have appreciated donations to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation, The Good Shepherd Centre, World Vision or charity of your choice. On line condolences may be made at
