Obituary for Bertha Rita Himmen

Himmen, Bertha Rita (nee Heroux)

Died this day 15 April 2019. Bertha was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Herbert (2009), as well as two of her four children, Pauline (1989) and Marie (2009). She also outlived her two brothers, Leo and Gaston, and her sister, Clairette Bester. Bertha is survived by two sons, William (Trudy) and John (Kim), as well as her only grandchild, Marguerite. Born in Quebec, Bertha was raised in the 1920s and 1930s at St. Mary’s Orphanage, unpretentious digs, in Hamilton’s north end. The nuns arranged her first employment at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She moved on to Greening Wire during WW2 and then to Westinghouse after the war. In 1948 Bertha married Herbert, a Dofasco worker. They enjoyed a honeymoon day trip to the CNE. She became a full-time homemaker. Long time member of both the CWL and Legion of Mary at St. Eugene’s, Bertha was also a volunteer at Saint Joseph’s Villa (Dundas) and the St. John’s Ambulance organization. She still made time for leisure pursuits such as ballroom dancing, sewing, and plenty of cribbage. Get the board out, Herbie.
We thank Margie Himmen for tremendous support all these years. We also thank Shari, Joyce, and the staff at Burloak LTC, as well as Aberdeen Gardens.
A celebration of Bertha’s life will be held at a later date.
