Obituary

LORENTZ, Sister Joyce, School Sister of Notre Dame
Died suddenly on May 22, 2020 in Kitchener, Ontario. She was 69 years old and in her 48th year as a School Sister of Notre Dame. Predeceased by her parents Albert and Lucy (Boegel) Lorentz and her sister Rose Dietrich. Lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, her sisters, Mildred Eckert, Marilyn Schleimer, Patricia Gohl, Bonnie Lidstone, Judy Nickl and her brothers Albert and Carl Sherer.
Sister Joyce attended St. Clements School, St. Clements and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Kitchener. In September 1968 she entered Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown. After graduating from Hamilton Teachers College, she began her teaching career in 1972 at St. Joseph School, Kitchener. Her next three assignments were St. Peter School, Unity, Saskatchewan, Sacred Heart School, Ladner, British Columbia and St Stephen School, Valleyview, Alberta. On returning to Ontario in 1986 she taught at Holy Family School, Hanover. For a few years Sister Joyce was involved in various services in the Toronto and Waterdown. Sister Joyce moved to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1995 where for the next several years she was involved in early child hood education. In 2010 she was an ESL( English as a Second Language) instructor at Regina Open Door Society. While in Regina she was coordinator for the Associate program of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She assembled the 13 Associates in Saskatchewan for annual workshops. When Sister Joyce returned to Ontario she continued teaching ESL with the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. Sister Joyce’s interests and concerns were far reaching. She was particularly interested in literacy programs for less fortunate children and for adult immigrants and refugees. In the summer of 2007 Sister Joyce participated in the Canadian Jesuits International Zambia program learning about sustainable agriculture and the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS in that country. With her many talents she readily offered her assistance in a variety of ways. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a memorial liturgy will be celebrated sometime in the future. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Burlington. www.dermodys.com

I was shocked and saddened to read about Sister Joyce’s passing in the
Regina Leader Post. I met Sister Joyce during the time she focused on
early childhood education as I was working at the University of Regina.
I sure enjoyed our conversations about how to best impact high quality
programs for our youngest learners. She had an enormous role and
impacted Prekindergarten to Grade 3 teachers using her depth of
knowledge about the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale in a
research study during her time in Regina. She was such a pleasant
person. She has left a wonderful legacy to her family and I treasure
the special memories I have of her. With sincere sympathy, Twyla

Cards and letters with shiny stickers and happy faces arriving in the mail from whatever far away distance Auntie Joyce was assigned at that time, is a memory we will treasure forever. No special occasion would be missed, especially a sacrament. She sure did know how to make a kid feel special. Family reunions were extra special, because we couldn’t wait for Auntie Joyce to come home. And what a unique pleasure it was to explain to the other kids that our aunt was a nun – but a cool nun! :)

As we aged, it progressed from ‘cool nun’ – to ‘good woman’! And we learned that this wasn’t news to anyone. What a wonderful role model to have in our lives. And what a awesome example of faith. We will miss so many things about Auntie Joyce.

We will miss her compassionate nature, able to treat everyone equally and stand up for what is morally right.

We will miss her amazing ability to listen to hear and understand, rather than respond, holding judgment and opinion, rather offering gentle guidance in the form of a kind and different perspective.

We will miss her generous and caring nature, always thinking of others before herself, and always making everyone feel valued, worthy, loved and special.

We will miss her amazing and overflowing faith, will her willingness to lend us whatever we needed when we were falling short of our own; often with an added: “God is Good!”

The loss on this earth, to all of us that have the privilege and honor of knowing and loving her, is too big to put into word. But no doubt the excitement from Heaven in anticipation of her arrival is equal.

Heaven just scored one heck of a good woman. I suppose… God is Good!

Love Julianne, Angela and Tricia Nickl and families.

Joyce and I both worked at Highland Church Campus in temporary assignments - I was in the preschool and she was in the ESL-LINC program upstairs. Her teaching style was so gentle and patient.

Joyce was able to laugh at herself when she couldn't figure out the new campus phones and I would joke that I liked being able to come upstairs with messages instead of calling.

She was always ready with a smile and friendly greeting. Rest in Peace, Sister Joyce.
