Hamster Love

I wasn't a witness to this story myself – Gramps told me this while we were looking through old pictures together this past Christmas. Zajac Aunts and Uncles: You'll have to let me know how this compares to your own memories. Gramps was talking about how much he liked the campus of Queen's University, explaining to me that he had once taken a short-term business course there. Then he laughed, shaking his head in amazement, and told me how he had had to drive from there back home (6+ hours) because he had got an emergency phone call from the kids (i.e. Maryanne, Michael, Maureen, Mercedes, George). The pet hamster had escaped from its cage, and everyone was afraid it would eat them at night. So Gramps got into the car, booked it to Hamilton, put the hamster in its cage, and drove back to Queen's. I mention this because it's not very different from all of those times I (or Mike or Coll or Pat, but mostly I) locked myself out of the house after school, and he had to drive down from near Upper Gage. Or the times we were sick... or "sick"... and he drove down with Wendy's spicy chickens and soup and crispers and two-bite brownies and chocolate milk. He had a rare gift of generosity. I think he must have simply loved the act of giving small joys, small tokens of love, to others. He devoted himself completely to those he loved when they (we) were in need, not just out of a sense of duty (which I think he had in large doses), but also, I think, because he was truly inspired by love and couldn't help but express this to everyone he met.
